SUCH IS FAME.
Varsity Victors have Quiet Home-coming. NO WELCOMING THRONG. The return to Christchurch this morning of the victorious Canterbury College team from the University tournament in Wellington was not a triumphal home-coming. There were no cheering crowds, no gathering of students to greet the victors. The fun of the tournament evidently ended when the southern teams boarded the ferry steamer in Wellington last night. Canterbury, in possession of the lawn tennis, athletic and rowing shields, as well as the tournament shield, and Otago, in possession of the ” wooden spoon,” returned south together: the Otago contingent went on in the express. But for the display of blazers there was nothing in their arrival to excite attention until the Otago students formed a circle on the station and made the morning air raucous with their haka. Canterbury immediately responded. Then both teams hastily assembled outside the station while a photographer “ shot ” them. That was all. Such is fame.
TOURNAMENT OVER. Ter Press Association. WELLINGTON. March 30. The Easter tournament representatives from Auckland, Canterbury and Otago were farewelled in characteristic fashion by Victoria College students this evening. The closing ceremonies of the 1932 tournament, although spirited, were carried out with the restraint which has marked the tournament and there were no disorderly scenes. A large body of students gathered at Thorndon Station to farewell the Auckland contingent. Ilakas and choruses formed the main items on the programme, together with the usual farewells; but the revellers were not allowed on the platform. The party then adjourned to the Ferry Wharf, where they were reinforced, and the South Island students were farew*elled by a crowd of three hundred Victoria College students, men and women, and a number- of former students. Oft repeated hakas, choruses and rival choruses filled the air with a merry din, and the flow of banter and college songs was maintained xi»i til the vessel sailed.
