A HEAVY FINE.

Intoxicated in Charge of I Motor-car. MAN’S ERRATIC DRIVING. Roy Hateley, aged 39, described as an advertisement writer, was fined £ls by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motorcar in Manchester Street on March 26. The defendant’s license was cancelled and he was prohibited from obtaining another till May 1, 1933. Sub-Inspector Edwards said that a constable saw the defendant driving in Manchester Street on the evening of March 26. The car was proceeding in an erratic manner, and when the driver tried to change gears he could . not manage it. When the constable stopped him, he was found to be in an advanced state of intoxication. At the station, Sergeant Hodgins said that Hateley was sufficiently under the influence to be arrested for drunkenness in the ordinary way. Counsel said that the defendant was an advertisement writer. He had been working hard for long hours and then attended a party. He said that he only drank two glasses of beer, but had had nothing to eat. Counsel suggested that lack of sleep, together with a few beers on an empty stomach accounted for the defendant’s condition when the policeman stopped him. The defendant was allowed seven days in which to pay his fine.
