POPPY DAY APPEAL.

Collection to be Made on April 22. Arrangements for the sale of poppies in connection with the annual Poppy Day street appeal on April 22 were made at a meeting of the Women’s Committee held in the Jellicoe Hall this morning. There were present; Mrs IT. T. J. Thacker (in the chair), the Mayoress (Mrs D. G. Sullivan), and Mesdames H. A. Bishop, L. H. Powell, J. C. Holmes, E. Chilton, E. G. Hogg, IT. Wyatt, A. Templer, 11. M. Fitz George, J. L. Philpott, J. S. Neville, A. Smith, R. Dey, P. Williamson, R. J. Munro, J. S. Kelly, IT. Fleck, Misses A. Hustwick, E. Bayliss, M. Cuthbert, Mabel Cuthbert and Sister M’Murtie, and Mrs J. R. Evans (honorary secretary). The Rev F. T. Read, president of the Christchurch branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, said that the year had been a difficult one for the association. Unemployment had increased and claims for assistance had been numerous. Since the inauguration of the No. 5 scheme it had become increasingly difficult to secure a subsidy on the money raised as a result of the Poppy Day appeal. He hoped that the collectors would do their best to sell a record number of poppies. Mr Read mentioned that the organiser of the appeal, Mr R. Grant, had been busy in the country districts and a good return was expected. He said that last year there had been rumours of unlicensed collectors attempting to sell poppies. This year, in order to prevent anything of that kind, the official poppies, which had been made by disabled returned soldiers, would have a green leaf as a distinguishing mark. Samples of the poppies to be sold were produced and passed round for examination by members.

Various stands around the city were allotted. It was stated that the Addington saleyards would be visited by collectors on April 20.
