BIG SPORTS CARNIVAL.

In Aid of Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund. A somewhat unusual attraction at the big sports carnival next Saturday at Lancaster Park will be a sprint event between Don M’Lennan, one of New Zealand’s fastest runners, and A. E. Fransden, a noted cycle racer. The distance will be a hundred yards. At tAvo o’clock a programme of events for primary school children will commence. These are always interesting. Amateur athletes will compete in running, cycling, walking, pole vault, a harriers’ event and a steeplechase, and big fields are promised. The Girls’ Athletic Association will conduct a series of events between teams representative of various Christchurch firms. Among the novelty items will be wood-chopping, wrestling and a tug-o’-war, for which ten teams have entered. A hundred competitors ■will appear in Highland dancing events. The Caledonian Pipe Band will march from Cathedral Square to Lancaster Park at 2.15 p.m. This caTnival is being held to raise money for the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund. The calls on all benevolent funds are very heavy, and the promoters confidently appeal to citizens to help by being present at the carnival, where they will secure more than their money’s worth of enjoyment.
