AMMONRA V. NIGHTMARCH
New Zealand, though possessing such a strong team on paper for the Sydney campaign, is not doing nearly as well as was expected. If it had not been for Nightmarch, the Dominion record at Randwick would have been very poor. The New Zealanders have not been over-lucky in that a number of minor places have come their way. Ammon Ra seems to have had too much of it for the time being. Details of the Chipping Norton Stakes, run at Randwick on March 19, show that Ammon Ra was all out and then had only half a length to spare. Certainly he made practically all his own running and set a fast pace, in addition to which he had a 71b penalty, but his effort set doubts in the minds of his sturdiest St Leger admirers. Nightmarch lost the race about a furlong from home. R. Reed tried to come through on the inside of Johnnie Jason, but there was not sufficient room and Nightmarch had to force his way through. It was obvious that pushing Johnnie Jason out of his path was distasteful, and he slowed up a little. Once clear, he came on again, but it was too late.
