Revenue from Cats.
To the Editor. Dear Sir,—Why have a dog tax and let cats go free? Dogs are faithful and useful, and are not nocturnal disturbers of the peace. The fallacy that cats keep rats and mice down is unconvincing. They spend far more time lying in wait for harmless little birds, yet nobody suggests that they are an effective check on the small bird nuisance. And most people keep cats more by accident than design; for the cats wish themselves on to householders and are usually a legacy from a former tenant. They are the hosts of hydatids and other diseases, and are not safe to be fondled by children. While the State needs revenue, it should impose a tax of 10s on all cats, male and female, for one is as bad as the other, if not worse.—l am, etc., A LIGHT SLEEPER.
