Difficulties Foreseen in Proposed Charge.

The. opinion that the estimated sav ing to the Education Department ol £7OOO by the imposition of a charge ol one penny a copy for the School Journal, as recommended by the Na tional Expenditure Commission, would be more apparent than real, because ol the difficulty of collecting the mon*\ from the children, was expressed by Mi C. S. Thompson, at a special meeting ol the Canterbury School Committees’ As sociation last evening. The proposa of the commission is that the cost O' the School Journal, at a penny a copy should be deducted from the capitation grants to committees.

“ We will soon have to pay for the privilege of being on committees,” com' mented Mr J. S. Barnett, when the re commendation was read to the meet ing.

Mr J. H. Jones said that at the West Christchurch School the deduo tion from the capitation grant would be about £l7 a year. Hr considered that it would be very difficult to collect the money from many children
