VARSITY TOURNEY
Otago Decision Still Awaited. QUESTION OF EXPENSES. (Special to the " Star.”) AUCKLAND, March 22. “ The fact that no word has been received from Otago as to the attitude of that University regarding the tournament is a matter of keen regret in Auckland,” said Mr J. N. Wilson, one of the tournament delegates of the Auckland University College, speaking this morning about the inter-University tournament at Wellington at Easter. Following the lead given by Canterbury, who, however, finally decided to send representatives, Otago has not shown itself in favour of the tournament. The reason assigned by Otago, added Mr Wilsbn, was finance. “ It is the practice of the Students’ Association of Otago University to pay the full amount of its representatives’ travelling expenses, but even if Otago cannot see its way clear to do that this year, it might fall in with the practice adopted by other colleges of paying a proportion of the travelling expenses. “It is felt in Auckland that, though any tournament is better than no tournament,” he added, “ there would not be the same satisfaction to colleges winning events when one of the four is not a competitor. In spite of the fact that no word has been received, Auckland is confident that Otago will be there.”
