FREE SCHOOL BOOKS.

Economy Proposals are e ‘ Scandalous.” An emphatic protest against the proposal of the National Expenditure Commission to discontinue the grant of £2OOO for the provision of free school books in necessitous cases was made at a special meeting of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association last evening. “It is a scandalous proposal,” declared Mr J. S. Barnett (Addington). He said that if- the supply of free books to children of poor parents was stopped the Government might just as well cut out free education for such children. The proposed economy could not be justified from any standpoint. He moved that the meeting protest against th« proposal. The motion was seconded by Mr C. Richardson (Phillipstown). The motion was carried unanimously. It was decided to support the proposal for the standardisation of school books over a period of five years.
