PENALTY ON RATES.

Power of Remission is Extended. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, March 21. The Government has decided to extend for a further period of tM’elve months the operation of section 42 of the Finance Act (No. 2) of last year, authorising local bodies to remit the additional charge of ten £er cent on unpaid rates. This information M'as contained in a reply by Mr Forbes to an urgent question in the House to-night by Mr W Nash (Labour, Hutt). The legislation passed 'last year authorised remissions on rates made and levied for the financial year which ends on March 31 next.
