“THE RED TERROR. "
Phar Lap Gets Nickname in U.S.A. HORSE HAS BRUISED LEG. (Continued from page 1.) United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received March 22, 12.55 p.m.) AGUA CALIENTE, March 21. Phar Lap’s trainer, Woodcock, has revealed that Phar Lap has bruised a leg. The bruise is not serious, Woodcock said, but. may make the leg sore for a day or two. Phar Lap was nominated on Sunday by his owner, Mr Davis, for the Agua Caliente Consolation Cup. of 2500 dollar?, one mile and a half, the feature which closes the tracks for the winter season. While the nomination was made on Sunday night, Mr Davis was not aware of the bruise, and Woodcock said to-day that it was doubtful whether his charge would start. Elliott, the jockey, said that Phar Lap ran just the way he was wanted to and exactly as had been planned. Future plans for the “ Red Terror ’* have not been formulated, but he will be taken east, probably to Chicago, within a short time.
“ How such a mean looking horse as Night Raid could sire a really great horse beats me,” says the racing commentator of “ The Times.” “It may be a case of blood going back to his sire’s own country. We hope that Phar Lap will run in England, enabling us to see what sort of a horse Night Raid could get in New Zealand.”
ENGLAND AWAITS VISIT. (Received March 22, 1 p.m.) LONDON, March 21. Turf writers give prominence to Phar Lap’s coming to England, where they; are eager to see him in the Cesarewitch competing against Brown Jack and Cameronian. The “ Daily Telegraph ” publishes a New Zealander’s letter protesting against Phar Lap, like Carbine, being incorrectly described as Australian, when both were bred and born in New Zealand.
