OBITUARY

Mrs Elizabeth Ward

The ranks of the old colonists were further depleted during the week by the death of Mrs Elizabeth Ward, at the age of eighty-five. The late Mrs Ward had been a resident of Christchurch for seventy-five years and was a daughter of the late Mrs J. S. Hawley, of St Martins. The family travelled from England by the sailing ship Palmyra and arrived in Port Chalmers in March, 1857, after a voyage of six months, waiting for six -weeks before a vessel could transfer them to Lyttelton. Mrs Ward spent her tenth birthday on beard. Mrs Ward was twice married. Her first husband was Mr R. M. Swanston, C.E., of Glasgow. She was widowed in 1882 and later married Mr W. J. Ward, of Kirwee, who predeceased her about thirty years ago. Of the family of six there are now living: Miss M. Swanston, Mr W. Swanston, of the Christchurch Gas Co., Mrs Walter Herrick and Mr A. S. Ward, of the Post and Telegraph Department., Christchurch. Mrs Ward was buried in the Bromley Cemetery on Thursday, many beautiful floral emblems and telegrams being sent from friends far and near.
