Rates amounting to £B3OO were paid to the City Council yesterday, bringing the total amount collected to £164,680 15s, or 49.35 per cent of the levy of £333,729 2s 4d. On the corresponding day last year 50.34 per cent of the levy had been collected. There are now only three and a half days left for the payment of rates before the 10 per cent penalty will be imposed. In addition to the usual hours, the Rate Collectors’ Department will be open to-day from 7 till 9 p.m. Rates not paid on Tuesday next, or which are not received through the post by the first mail on Wednesday, will be subject to the 10 per cent penalty for late payment.
