MANUAL TRAINING.

Teachers Urge Retention of Present System. Arguments in favour of the retention of the present system of manual and domestic science training in primary schools were presented to a protest meeting of school teachers last evening by Mr C. Colee. A heavy curtailment in the expenditure on this class of instruction is proposed by the National Expenditure Commission. Mr Colee said that at no time had the need been so great to train the girl in occupations which would not bring her into direct competition with the boy in the labour market, and to develop in her an appreciation of home-making. The home science course did this. Domestic science was the only subject in which practical cooperation could be made with the work of the Health Department in teaching the importance of correct food correctly cooked in relation to health and proper physical development as advocated by Mr Renfrew White in the new text book on physical culture.
