MARIST TEACHER’S DEATH

Was Successful Rugby Coach. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, March 16. The death is announced of Brother Calixtus, director of the Marist Brothers school, and formerly of Invercargill and Christchurch. Death followed a stroke on returning from swimming sports last night. He had a brilliant scholastic record. In addition to his educational duties, Brother Calixtus was keenly interested in all sporting activities, particularly Rugby football. He was a splendid football coach and an authority upon every branch of the game. While in Christchurch he coached the senior Marist team which won the Canterbury Rugby Union's championship five years in succession. In Auckland he coached the boys’ team which won the Auckland Rugby Union’s championship for three years in succession. He was a member of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union and attended its meeting on Monday evening. He was largely responsible for the organisation of the Marist Old Boys’ Football Club. For many years he organised the sports held in connection with the annual St Patrick’s Day celebrations and his familiar figure will be missed at the sports to be held in the Domain to-day.
