REMOVING ’QUAKE RISKS.
Alterations to Power Station Proposed. In order to eliminate earthquake risks, it is proposed to effect alterations to the Armagh Street converter power station, which is an old building erected in the pioneering days with electricity in Christchurch. Details of the scheme were outlined to the meeting of the Christchurch City Council last evening by the Electricity Committee. In common with action taken elsewhere, the committee has had under consideration the possible earthquake risk in some of the Electricity Department’s buildings. A report on the subject has been received from Mr R. A. Campbell, who was a member of the Earthquake Investigation Committee. The converter station is an old building dating from the original installation in Christchurch in 1004, and a number of recommendations have been submitted to the committee for its strengthening against possible earthquake damage. Among these are the removal of the high brick gables at each end in Armagh Street and the yard. The report was adopted.
