WILLING BOUTS.

Varsity Boxers Battle with Sports Club Team. TOURNEY PREPARATIONS. Last evening-, in the Canterbury College Gymnasium, some scientific and willing bouts were witnessed between members of the Christchurch Sports Club ajid the University Boxing Club. These amateur contests were arranged to enable the local college students to gain further ring knowledge and experience before travelling to Wellington to take part in the competition for the Inter-University Tournament Shield, to bo held at Easter. The evening’s boxing was of a fair standard, the honours being divided fairly evenly between the clubs. The Christchurch Sports Club hopes to open its season early next month, when a tournament will be held, the proceeds of which will be donated to the funds of the All Nations Fair. The following officials controlled the contests:—Referees, Messrs J. D. Hutchison and J. T. Burrows: judges, Messrs C. S. Thomas, W. E. Mouldey, B. Rennell and R. H. Livingstone. Results:— FLY-WEIGHT. K. Marshall (Varsity) v. F. O’Connor (Christchurch). —The opening bout was willing from the first, O’Connor getting in some good jolts with his left. Marshall was blowing at the end of the second round, when O’Connor had the upper hand. Well-directed lefts and hooks in the final round gave O’Connor the decision. FEATHER-WEIGHT. C. "Bell (Varsity) v. B. Carey (Christchurch). —Carey opened with plenty of pep and punished Bell severely with short, sharp jolts to the jaw. The Christchurch lad gave all the punishment and showed superior ringcraft throughout. Bell could not last the final round, the bout going to Carey. BANTAM-WEIGHT. G. H. Wybert (Varsity) v. N. Fisher (Christchurch).—The bout opened strongly, both lads getting in some good body work. Wybert had an advantage in weight and reach, but Fisher put up a plucky stand, showing good footwork and feinting. The final round was fairly even, the decision going to Wybert. LIGHT-WEIGHT. N. Gray (Varsity) v. T. Winder (Christchurch).—ln the first two rounds, Gray had the upper hand, delivering some strong, straight lefts with rights to the body. In the final round, Grav, with superior fighting, had the Christchurch lad down for nine. Winder made a plucky stand till the gong sounded. The verdict was in favour of 11. Glover (Varsity) v. K. Livingstone (Christchurch).—ln the opening stages, this bout was fast and willing, but the pace could not be kept up and both boys showed signs of tiring at the end of the first round. The second round opened furiously, but Glover, with right hooks, sent the Christchurch boy to the ropes. The Varsity lad was given the decision after punishing Livingstone severely. R. Chester (Varsity) v. C. Winder (Christchurch).—This bout opened with plenty of vim. Winder being quick on his feet. The round. however, ended abruptly, when Winder was disabled through his wrist giving way. The bout was Chester’s. W. Monk (Varsity) v. A. D. Park (Christchurch). —Park, who was nippy on his feet, got in some good punches to the head and body. Monk preferred to let his opponent do all the leading. Both were taking punishment, yet boxing strongly, a fast exchange bf blows being witnessed in the final round. Monk was the winner. WELTER-WEIGHT. W. Brittenden (Varsity) v. F. Vanderbean (Christchurch).—This was the most scientific contest of the evening, both boxers showing good footwork, with clean lefts to the jaw and rights to the body. The’first round was even, but in the second the Varsity lad had Vanderbean on the ropes. It was Brittenden’s bout. MIDDLE-WEIGHT. B. Wheeler (Christchurch) v. R. Gordon (Varsity).—This bout proved to be short, a hard punch by Wheeler sending Gordon to the floor for the count. NO DECISION BOUT. R. Chester (Varsity) v. N. Moulin (Christchurch).—This bout proved to he both amusing and instructive. Moulin showed superior footwork and altogether proved himself a clever boxer. His evasion of Chester’s punches was amusing at times, but his ability to feint and take advantage of an opening were ably demonstrated.
