TROTTING NOTES.

for the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting will close at nine o’clock on Friday night. * * ■* * Nominations for the trotting events at the Westland Racing Club’s meeting will close at 8.30 p.m. on Thursday. BEHAVED WELL. The trotter Merrijigs w'as on his best behaviour in both his races at Timaru. He finished fourth in the mile and five furlongs and third in the two miles event, after being prominent throughout both races. Merrijigs is not a very good stayer and in his previous races he has rarely trotted solidly, but L. Frost kept him to his work in good style. * * * * Real Bov, after racing successfully on the West Coast, has not gone on improving since then. At Timaru last week he was quickly out of the contest in the Temuka Handicap. * * * * Judged by the manner in which Edith Voyage raced at Wellington and Timaru, the South Canterbury-trained trotter appears to have lost a good deal of her speed. She had a good position early at Timaru, but although keeping steadily to her work, she lacked dash and eventually finished up in fifth position. MAY ATONE. At the end of last month, at New Brighton, Stanley Bingen finished on well after a poor beginning in the Autumn Handicap, of two miles. He was made favourite for the Temuka Handicap at Timaru but a bad break early in the contest settled his chance. Stanley Bingen, who is in J. Bryce’s stable, looks in capital shape and if he can be made to go solidly in his future races he is likely to race very well, as he has plenty of speed and stamina. * * * * E. C. M’Dermott’s three-year-old trotter, Garner, was started twice at Timaru and went solidly each time. She has not been long in work and she has improved very fast. It looks as though her owner-trainer has one of ‘the most promising young trotters now in commission. AN AUSTRALIAN DAM. Black Jester, who won the Trial Handicap at Timaru, is a four-year-old by Nelson Bingen from Vera Mauritius, who was bred by Mr J. B. Zander, of Melbourne, and imported to the Dominion by Mr Owen Kelly, of Gore. She is by Mauritius, a stallion brought from America by the late R. M’Millan. Mauritius was brought to Canterbury, and after doing a short season here, he went to Melbourne. Miss Vera Capel, the dam of Vera Mauritius, also came from America, being imported by L. Robertson, who raced her at Addington before she left for Victoria. * * * * After winning three races at the Wellington meeting, the Belfast trainer, C. S. Donald, had an off da}' at Timaru, as he failed to score a win. He started St Felix, Grand Canyon, Sunny Bob, Special Sun, Sister Rose, Morning Sun and Automatic, but the last-named, who w r as second to Gunfire in the Waiiti Handicap, w r as the only moneyearner. The Belfast trainer has not raced any trotters at the last three meetings he has attended. The trotter Lee Boy, who was backed more than once earlier in the season, again received support for the Kingsdown Handicap, but he did not race satisfactorily. Evidently the Lee Norris horse, who is trained by R. Townley, does not reproduce his track form in his races.

Great Harvester, who was the outsider of the eleven starters in the twomile trotters’ race at Timaru, went his best race for some time past. Great Harvester, w’ho is by Sonoma Harvester from the O.Y.M. mare, 0.1. C., although possessing speed, has failed to go steadily in many of his races. In his last effort he was a triffe slow away but at the end of half a mile he was in fourth place and he was there at the finish. He did not make a mistake throughout the journey, and now that he has learned to control his gait he should win a race. MAY GO FAR. Gay Paree. who was third in the Kingsdown Handicap at Timaru, put up a very fine performance. He was giving away 120 yards in a mile and five furlongs event and was behind a field of fifteen. Unfortunately, he did not begin well and it took him quite fifty 3*ards before he got properly into his gait. Then he went fast for the w’hole distance, although he had no chance with Tanepai, who had the easiest of victories. Honora Bingen beat the scratch trotter by a couple of lengths for second place. Gay Paree went the distance in 3min 47sec, w’hich works out at a fraction better than 2min 20sec to the mile. The next race was the Trial Handicap, for pacers, over the same distance, and Black Jester, the winner, took 3min 49 2-ssec to go the journey from the limit, so that Gay Paree’s time was better. Gay Paree has always possessed plenty of speed, but failed to control it in his earlier races. With racing experience he is doing much better and he has made a great improvement since going into J. S. Shaw’s stable. Gay Paree is by Guy Parrish from the Denver Huon pacer, Leila Denver, who had a lot of speed, but was a bad mare at the barrier. As Gay Paree is only five years old, he looks like reaching high honours among the trotting division,

Black Jester, a winner at Timaru, has been penalised 72yds in the Morven Trot to be run at the Waimate meeting on Thursday. TROTTING FIXTURES. March 16— Manawatu T.C. March 16—Wyndham T.C.
