Memorial Gardens.
A Garden Corner.
THERE are many war memorial columns scattered about which were erected by district residents to perpetuate the memory of their local fallen soldiers. Some of these columns are very untidy, it being apparently no one’s duty to clean up around them, which is a great pity. In several instances where space and means afforded, a more or less elaborate setting was provided under satisfactory maintenance arrangements. Such a one is the Cheviot memorial, which occupies the best corner in the town, and is always well kept, by arrangement with the County Council. Just now it is gay with roses, with grass lawns and gravel paths, well kept, and background of purple plums. The Cheviot people have every reason to be proud of their soldiers’ memorial. The same can be said of Rangiora. where, though Ithe setting is different, equally pleasing results are always observable. T. D. LENNIE.
