To-morrow the Papanui Tennis Club’s team is playing in the final of the C grade shield competition at Wilding , Park. The team reached the same position last year, only to be beaten in the final. This year’s team is nearly i the same as last year’s. Miss Rene Tullett, who plays second, has only lost one match in the two seasons, and Miss Quinn, playing first, has only lost one single this season. The same good record is held by Ivan Corich, first man. The other members of the team arc Rex' Rossiter, Cyril Smith, D. Moore, Miss Keeper and Mrs Blumskv. Memorial Hall Committee. The Papanui Memorial Hall Committee met on Thursday evening. Mr J. Sturrock presided in the absence of the chairman, Mr R. Rickerby. Others present were:—Messrs T. Wood, C. W. Moore, G. Radford. W. G. Chapman and A. Syme (secretam ). A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr Rickerby in his illness. The Town Clerk wrote stating that the Finance and Bylaws Committee had decided to take no further action in regard to exempting the hall from rating. The committee had also decided that it could not see its way clear to recommend the City Council to take over the complete ! control of the hall. This would mean that the Waimairi Council would be relieved of all responsibility and this could not be done. Mr Sturrock said that the position was the same as last year. The revenue for the year was not sufficient to pay for the upkeep of the hall and the rates, too. The City Council and the Waimairi Council would have to fight the matter out as to the relative indebtedness. Mr Chapman (member for the Papanui riding and representative of the Waimairi Council* said that the Waimairi Council would not pay. The position was j a different matter for the countv com- ! pared with that of the city. The city could spread the deficiency over the whole of the ratepayers, but the Papanui riding would have to pay the Wai- ! mairi Council’s share. It was decided j Ito send a letter to the City Council j 1

explaining the whole position. The chairman stated that the annual meeting of ratepayers would be held on April 14, when a new committee would be elected. Waimairi Tennis Club.
