WAIMAIRI COUNTY.
Proposed New Recreation Groundfl The Waimairi County Council met last night; present—Messrs W. J. Walter (chairman), C. E. Cross, J. Cleland, F. S. Scott, C. W. Moore, W. G. Chapman, G. Gardner, J. Liggins, T. O. Newnham and W. P. Spencer. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Liggins for going to Wellington on a deputation from the council in regard to having Travis and New Brighton Roads declared secondary highways. A deputation from the Christchurch Free Ambulance Association was received. Mr V. Roberts gave details of tho work of the society, and it was decided to consider the matter of a contribution when the next year’s estimates were reviewed. The electrical engineer (Mr C. Burrows) reported that trouble had been experienced in Burwood and part of Marshland, and a new transformer was urgently needed. A request was received for permission to erect huts on the towing path of the river Styx near Brooklands. Objections were received from residents at Brooklands, and the application was refused. A letter was received from Mr J. Gordon asking that the vacant area at the back of Nortlicote Settlement be turned into a park and recreation ground. The writer offered to call a meeting of they did should be subsidised or otherwise helped. It was decided that the member for the riding (Mr Chapman) and the chairman meet the residents and go into the matter. A letter was received from the Tramway Board replying to the council’s protest against the stopping of the Northcote buses. The letter stated that the line was run at a loss, and under the proposed scheme by the Tramway Board the Kaiapoi and Belfast buses would take the residents to the city with a non-stop run. Mr Chapman protested against the reply, and the letter was received.
