HIGH SCHOOLS’ MATCH.

Christchurch Draw with Waitaki. (Special to the "star.") , OAMAEU, March 9. Ihe annual match between Christchurch and Waitalci Boys' High Schools which began yesterday, was continued to-day, and ended in a draw greatly ?-> favour of Christchurcli. Yesterday Christchurch in the first innings scored 225 and Waitaki replied with 192. This morning Gill and Hadlee opened the visitors’ second innings. Runs came steadily off Smith and Kent and it was not until Dick replaced the former that a wicket fell, Hadlee being beaten after compiling 29 runs. Cobden joined Gill. Fast' scoring saw the century in sfeventy-five minutes. Gill reached his half-century with a nice four off Dick. Runs continued to come until Cobden was caught on the boundary. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 169 for two wickets. Cook and Gill resumed, but a good ball by Smith saw the former dismissed for 5. Now began a bad rot, four wickets falling for 14 runs. Kent and Smith were found very troublesome. Vincent was the only batsman, after Gill was caught in the slips off Kent, to make a stand, and the visitors’ innings closed for 232 runs. R. D. Dick and Mathias btegan Waitaki’s second strike, with over 250 runs to get' and a little under three hours in which to make them. Cobden and Cook opened the Christchurch attack, and before 10 was up the latter dismissed Dick. Kent came in and Cobden’s first ball beat him. B—2—o. Paape was the incom'er, and he and Mathias brought the score to 65 before Paape was caught by Vincent. Smith was the incomer and runs came steadily until Mathias was clean-bowled by Cook. In the next over Smith was dismissed, leaving the score 94—5—20. M’Arthur and Forbes did not last long and Waitaki’s position 106—7—2 did not appear rosy. However Rendle and Kerr played carefully, bringing the score to 138, when the latter was well caught'. J. S. Dick camte next and was clean-bowled after scoring a single. With only a few minutes left, and one wicket to fall, the excitement became intense. Rendle and Watson doggedly staved off defeat. The match ended in a draw, with Waitaki 114 runs behind and only one wicket' to fall. Scores:— CHRISTCHURCH. First Innings.
