UNUSUAL MEMORIAL.

Cinematograph Equipment at

Soldiers’ Home.

As the result of injuries received in a race at Hurst Park, the English amateur horseman, Mr Lawrence Whitfield, was for many months a patient at the Star and Garter home for disabled soldiers and sailors at Richmond (England). The injuries eventually proved fatal. Mr Whitfield never tired of emphasising the extremely kind and sympathetic consideration shown towards him by members of the staff throughout the period he was under their care. Those who were familiar with the wishes of the deceased sportsman decided to co-operate in an effort permanently to place on record his deep appreciation of the kindly attentions bestowed upon him.

The culmination of their generous activities resulted in the presentation of a cinematograph equipment to the Home, which will provide a welcome entertainment to a large number of exservice men who are patients in the institution. One of the leading film organisations has promised to supplyfilms.

A tablet erected on the wall of the Star and Garter Home Theatre bears the following inscription:— “ The Cinematograph Equipment installed in this hall was presented in 1932 to the Star and Garter Home for Disabled Sailors and Soldiers by his brother sportsmen in memory of Flying-Officer Lawrence (Ginger) Whitfield, Royal Air Force, who died in the Home on September 17, 1931. ’
