NOT ON RACECOURSE.
Orphanage Children and Picnic. COMPLAINT IN DUNEDIN. (Special to the “Star.”) DUNEDIN, March 9. Because the Otago Motor Club’s annual picnic for orphans was held on the Wingatui racecourse, the matron of one Presbyterian orphanage refused to allow the children under her charge to attend the picnic. Eighteen children were debarred from attending the picnic, while between 300 and 400 children from other orphanages, including Presbyterian institutions, were having a happy outing. The Motor Club is indignant over the regrettable incident, and is bringing a complaint before the Presbyterian Social Service Association. An official of the association stated that the question of the children attending the picnic was left to the matrons of the institutions, and the woman in charge of the particular orphanage referred to probably felt that the racing environment would affect the children.
Last year children from the same orphanage were debarred from attending the picnic, but the Motor Club was given no explanation then.
