DEATH OF MR G. PARSONS.

Mr George William James Parsons, whose death occurred at Moana on Monday, was a man who,*in the early days of the city’s growth, took an active part in the affairs of the community and who in his lifetime made a host of friends. With his parents he came to New Zealand half a century ago and his father set up in Christchurch the business of a monumental maspn which his son was later to carry on. The family settled in the old Sydenham ward and it was there that he first entered into municipal politics, becoming a member of the Sydenham Borough Council in the late nineties, lie was returned election after election until 1903 when the borough amalgamated with the city. He was then elected as one of the four representatives of the ward on the City Council, of which he remained a member until 1907, when he was defeated by the present Mayor of the city, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P. He did not again enter public life. The late Mr Parsons was a foundation member of the Sj'denham Money Club and several years ago he was elected president of that organisation, a position which he held at the time of his death. He was a keen angler, but took little interest in any other sport.
