ASHBURTON NEWS.

Deputations Received by Presbytery. (Special to the “Star.”) ASHBURTON, March 8. At a meeting of the Ashburton Presbytery this afternoon commissions were received from Rakaia session in favour of Mr C. H. Oakley; from Springburn in favour of Mrs S. J. Webb; from Mayfield in favour of Mr F. Griffiths, and from Methven in favour of Mr H. Lock. A deputation from Hinds, consisting of Messrs J. Marshall and G. M’Keage, waited on the Presbytery and explained the financial position of the Hinds parish. It was agreed to report the views of the deputation to the Home Mission Committee with a view to a settlement. Sister Annie, representative of Maori Missions, will speak at Wakanui, Pendarvis and Methven next Sunday. The Revs W. Marshall and R. Morgan and their elders reported on the financial position of Mayfield and were instructed to continue to make the best possible financial arrangements with the Home Commissions Committee. AUenton School Committee. At a meeting of the Allenton School Committee last evening, Mr E. C. Bathurst presiding, the head master (Mr E S. Chambers) reported that the roll number was 254 with an average attendance of 242, equal to 95 per cent. The chairman reported that arrangements were well in hand for the school sports meeting to be held on March 18. Personal. Mr H. C. Barton the retiring president of the Ashburton A. and P. Association, was the recipient at this afternoon’s meeting of the association of a specially bound copy of the last show catalogue. Mrs W. H. Robinson, district president of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, Mrs M. Aitkenhead (Ashburton president) and Mrs J. M. Murdoch left this evening for Wanganui, where they will represent Tinwald, Ashburton and Mayfield respectivelv at the Women’s Christian Temperance Union Convention, which opens on Thursday. The Rev A. G. Morrison, Rakaia, was, at to-day’s meeting of the Ashburton Presbytery, appointed Moderator for the ensuing twelve months. Mr F. W. Watt has been re-elected chairman of directors of the Ashburton Permanent Building Society, and Mr E. F. Nicoll deputj'-chairman. The Finance Committee will consist of the former and Mr R. A. Collins.
