MID-WEEK BOWLING.

First Day’s Results in Annual Tourney.

The annual tournament which completes the season’s mid-week bowling fixtures in the Christchurch Centre was begun yesterday. Four greens were occupied by forty rinks from Edgeware, Canterbury, Papanui, Beckenham, R.S.A., Sumner, Elmwood, Opawa, Linwood, United, Cashmere, Sydenham, Sunnyside, Shirley and Barrington. The Elmwood, Papanui and Edgeware greens were in first-class playing order, though the strong wind militated against exhibitions of brilliant play. The green winners from the four greens used will meet next Thursday to find the winners of the tournament. Results:— Edgeware Green. Wins. Losses. The singles championship of the St Albans Club was concluded yesterday, when the Rev J. W. Hayward beat H. B. Oakey in the final. Canterbury Club. R. Haworth was successful In the singles championship of the Canterbury Club, beating J. A. Redpath in the final. Papanui Club. The Rev E. Bandy is the singles champion of the Papanui Club his opponent in the final being R. Bond. Opawa Club. The Opawa Club will not be represented to-morrow In the Maddison Trophy Competition. The Rev N. Burgess won the club’s singles championship, but he will be absent from Christchurch during the coming week.
