FROM WANGANUI.

Pomp and Midinette for

Trentham

(Special to the “Star.") WANGANUI, March 9.

W. Rayner will leave here on Tuesday for Trentham with Pomp and Midinette. Pomp will run in the Thompson Handicap, in which he has 7.2. The son of Absurd is not a quick enough beginner to do himself justice in sprint events, but if he can get a good position in the early stages in the Thompson Handicap he should run out a very fast mile. He looks all the better for his racing at Wanganui, and he should be at his best at Trentham. Midinette has pot raced since the Auckland summer meeting, but she has been kept going and appears to be steadily improving. This filly has yet to show of her best, but the -way she is hitting out suggests that she will give * a good account of herself at Trentham, where she will run in the Pacific Handicap on the first day. It is understood that the Rangitikei Racing Club will come out about even on its recent meeting.

The autumn meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club resulted in a loss of something like £l5O, but this result must be considered satisfactory in the prevailing conditions. It is pleasing to know that present intentions are to hold the two-day winter meeting as usual in May. The steeplechase meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club is always a very popular one with owners and trainers of cross-country horses, and though the stake money -will not be as large as in some previous years it will be good enough no doubt to attract excellent fields.

Star Area has been put into work again after a year's spell, which appears to have done the son of Acre a lot of good. He looks bright and well on it, and should make good at the hurdling game, at which he is to be tried. He is now und.?r Hugh Johnston’s care.

W. Rayner is now busy with three of Mr G. M. Currie’s yearlings, which are to be prepared for next season’s racing. They include two fillies and a colt. The latter is by Limond—Drax, -while one of the fillies is by Lysander —Bronze, and the other by Pombal Motley. They are a nice-looking trio and appear to have been well done by. Lysander was such a brilliant galloper and has furnished into such a splendid type of thoroughbred that it will be interesting to see how the filly got by him out of Bronze will turn out. Mr L. G. Paul intends to take Arisus to Auckland for the Easter Handicap. The son of Thespian—Pennon is going along nicely and should be in good form by Easter. He usually races well at Ellerslie, and if at his best on the day should run a very fast mile. Orapai figures mong the nominations for Wellington, Opunake and Paeroa, but no decision has been reached as to where he will race next week. Ladv Quex is galloping in great style at New Plvmouth, in preparation for the Challenge Stakes at Trentham. On Saturday she went six furlongs in Imm 15 3-ssec comfortably, the last half-mile in sec'.
