BROADSIDING

Fine Riding by Kilmister at Monica Park. ATTEMPTS ON RECORD. Wally Kilmister, Wellington’s broadsiding idol, lowered the colours of both Cyril Anderson and Charlie Blacklock with ease, at Monica Park Speedway on Saturday night. In addition he wow the First Division Handicap after conceding as much as five seconds. He was only defeated once and then neither he nor his opponent, Blacklock, had his machine in proper order. Spectacular, fast and endowed with great track sense, Kilmister is the equal of any rider that has been seen at Monica Park, including the great Burton and the Australian crack. Case. The Record Attempts.

Twice attempts were made during the evening to break “ Squib ” Burton’s one mile record &f. lmin 17 3-ssec, but neither attempt was successful. Kilmister tried first but he lost time shutting off at the corners, he covered the mile in lmin 19 3-ssec. Anderson was more successful so far as time was concerned, but he spilled before he could complete the mile. His lap times were: First lap 19sec, second 18 3-ssec. third 19see. The aggregate for the three laps was 56 3-ssec and, if he had completed the final lap in 19 or even 20sec, he would have broken the record. The record attempt did not improve Anderson’s engine and in the match races with Kilmister later he developed trouble which pointed to a defective piston. Unable to procure a suitable machine he had to drop out of the final heat of the three-cornered match race with the Wellington man and Blacklock.

Blacklock rode well, but was outclassed by Kilmister and Anderson. False starts completely spoiled the second match event and the. patience of the crowd was exhausted when, in the third heat, both Kilmister and Blacklock had trouble with their mounts. New Rider’s Success.

The Secc-nd Division Handicap was won by a new rider, Roy Nelson, who, making his first appearance, won both his heat and the final in times that would have done credit to a rider of much greater experience. Two second division riders, promoted to the first division on Saturday night, acquitted themselves well. These were George Farmer and Jack Forbes. They secured second and third places in the final of the big handicap event. The most outstanding local rider, outside of Blacklock, was Hobson, who showed that his knowledge of track tactics is swiftly improving. Percy Dunn was the only rider to receive injury and he wrenched his knee. Lunn drifted out in the grandstand corner and struck the rear wheel of Kilmister. He somersaulted off his machine and came to rest near the safety fence. There were net many spills. There is a possibility of another meeting next Saturday night, although it had been previously announced that Saturday’s meeting would close the season locally. Results:— FIRST DIVISION HANDICAP, of one mile. First heat: Jack Forbes (ssec) 1. P. Lunn (3sec) 2. Time—lmin 29 3-osec. Second heat: G. Farmer (4sec) 1, D. Packer (2sec) 2. Time—lmin 31sec. In the final Kilmister cracked on the pace and, in the second lap, went into the grandstand slide with Dunn. The Wellington man drew ahead and Dunn drifted out. touching the rear wheel of the leading machine and spilled. With only Farmer to catch Kilmister went on and won easily. Neither Blacklock s nor Kilmister's machine was running right, but Blacklork’s was sufficiently faster to win. Kilmister S, Blacklock 5, Anderson 3. FTRST MATCH P-ACE, of one mile (rolling start) —D. Packer 1, R. Ranby 2. Time—lmin 25sec. Packer demonstrated superiority in the first slide, but Ranby kept close handy and challenged strongly in the final lap. SECOND MATCH RACE—T. Tompkins 1. N. Gray 2. Time —lmin 25sec. Tompkins drove round Gray in The first slide and came down the straight with a comfortable lead. The result was never in doubt. THIRD MATCH RACE—.T. Hobson 1, .T. Oakley 2. Time—lmin 25sec. Oakley led Hobson out of the first slide and Hobson tried driving round the outside. Although faster, Hobson had not sufficient speed to carry him round and in the third lap took the only course and changed his tactics coming down the hack straight. He hugged the grass line in the straight and in the corner Oakley went out just enough to let Hobson through. Quick to seize the advantage, Hobson went on, to win in easy fashion. SPEEDWAY SCRATCH RACE, of one mile (rolling start). First heat: L Packer 1. N. Gray 2, J. Oakley 3. Time—lmin 24sec. Second heat: T. Tompkins 1, J. Hobson 2, R. Ranby 3. Time—lmin 24 l-ssec. Final. Packer 1 Tompkins 2 Hobson 3 Time—lmin 23 4-ssec.

Packer led the others info the top corner and superior speed gave him a good lead down the back straight. There was not much separating Hobson and Tompkins, but the latter hung on to a slight advantage until the final slide. Coming out of the corner he went a trifle wide and Hobson was quick to get into the opening. Tompkins, probably unaware of the proximity of the other, closed in again, and Hobson dodged, but came down. He pushed his mount into third place. SECOND DIVISION HANDICAP, of one mile. First heat: Rewi Dixon (lsec) 1, N. Stow (lsec) 2. Time—lmin 35sec. Second heat: R. Nelson (ssec) 1, J. Roscoe (lsec) 2. Time—lmin 36sec. Final. Nelson 1 Stow 2 Dixon o Time—lmin 33 1-ssec. Nelson benefited by his generous handicap in the final. He led all the way. To beat him, the others would have had to clock a little slower than lmin 29sec, which they were hardly

capable of.' Stow' turned the table on Dixon and had a lengthy lead throughout the race.
