TROTTING NOTES.

11— ==; = for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting will close at nine o'clock to-night. * * * * Acceptances for two trotting events at the Waimate meeting will close at eight o’clock to-morrow night. * * * * Acceptances for the South Wairarapa Trotting Club’s meeting will close at eight o-lock to-night. *. * * Nominations for the Easter meeting of the Metropolitan Trotting Club close at noon on Thursday. FIRST AND LAST. The locally owned Miss Leda, who was the outsider of the field, won the Introductory Handicap, the opening event at Wellington on Saturday, by a narrow margin, after a race in which all the others broke. She is an aged mare by Hal Zolock and is one of the few of her sire’s progeny to go at the trotting gait. She has been racing for a number of years and is never likely to reach the highest honours on the track, although she is very solid in her work and possesses plenty of stamina. She did not race so well in the twomile event later in the day, finishing last, but she was penalised 24yds lor her early success. WON TWICE. Astral had an easy victory in the Gracefield Handicap, tie is a five-year-old brother to the brilliant King Pointer and is in C. S. Donald’s .stable. Astral went away smartly, was always well placed and drew right away at the finish. He looks like making a high-grade pacer and bred as he is, he should race well over two miles with more age and race experience. His effort was a very good one for a young pacer, who has done little racing. Penalised 12yds for his win, he scored his second victory by accounting for the Taita. Handicap, of a mile and five furlongs.

Anon, who was second favourite for the Armstrong Memorial Handicap, did not exhibit her great stamina in the contest. She was well placed all the way, but failed to show any dash in the final stages. GOES WELL FOR SHAW. The Auckland pacer, Impromptu, made no race of the Armstrong Memorial Handicap. Driven by J. S. Shaw, who thoroughly understands him. Impromptu went away very fast and was quickly in a good position. From this out he appeared to have the field well beaten and he won very easily. He won five races last season and was* successful at Wellington earlier this season. Leaving Shaw’s stable, he went to Auckland, where has not raced well, but he looks in his best form at present and he paced a very fine race. Impromptu is by Pedro Pronto from the speedy Petrova and he is a very fine stayer. He came south to again join J. S. Shaw’s stable after the meeting. BADLY FATTED. Hydro, who did not start in the Introductory Handicap, has every chance in the Palmer Handicap, in which he was just beaten by Todd Lonzia. The Oamaru trained trotter is badly gaited and repeatedly hits himself in races. In his last effort, driven by M. Holmes, he went without any mistakes, but lacked stamina to withstand the finishing effort of Todd Lonzia. When Hydro has more confidence in races he should do better and his driver is deserving of credit for keeping him to his gait throughout the contest.
