HANGING BASKETS AND BULBS.

When well cared for and in a position that is suitable, a wire basket planted with bulbs looks very pretty, and can be very attractive. The chief points are to use good fresh moss, and plenty of it, to line the basket, so as to prevent soil silting through, also to see that the soil used is rather on the stiff side, so as to hold the moisture well, and last, but not least, to see that the soil never becomes dry and contracts, so as to leave the sides. There are various bulbs which are

particularly suitable for the purpose, amongst which are snowdrops, scilla sibinica, chinodoxas, crocuses, lachenalias. When first planted the baskets can be hung in the dark, but as soon as the shoots show through the soil the baskets must be brought out to the light. The soil must never be allowed to dry out, but if by any chance it does the only way to ensure thorough soaking is to submerge the basket in a tub of water until soaked through.
