KICKED BY HORSE.
Death Follows Racecourse Accident. INQUEST CONCLUDED. A verdict that Harry Eustace Nicholas died from intestinal trouble, the result of being kicked in the stomach by a horse on the New Brighton Racecourse on February 23, was returned by the Coroner, Mr 11. P. Lawry, at the inquest held yesterday afternoon. Nicholas died in the Christchurch Hospital on February 27. William Henry Rountree, a contractor, said that he was on the New Brighton Racecourse on February 23, when Nicholas was grazing two horses on the grass track. lie was standing between them, holding the leads. The horses made a snap at each other, and one of them kicked Nicholas. Dr Beryl Lawrence, house surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital, stated that she had examined Nicholas when he was admitted. He had the symptoms and signs of internal abdominal injury. At an operation later, it was found that there was considerable bruising of the lower abdomen, but not perforation. and evidence of early peritonitis. The cause of death was peritonitis consequent on the injury to the small bowel.
