The Nobel prizes were inaugurated by Alfred B. Nobel, a Swedish scientist, at his death in 1896. He left a huge sum of money to establish a fund from which were to be awarded annually prizes to persons making the greatest contributions to mankind in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace.
