REMAND GRANTED.
Police Want to Complete Inquiries.
A hipt that the police would shortly be proceeding with charges concerning the theft of the safe from the Club Hotel. Sydenham, was given by ChiefDetective Carroll in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. In preferring a charge against Leonard Walter Downing, thirty-three years of age, he said that further inquiries would have to I be made, as Downing was believed to be connected with the theft. Downing was charged with breaking and ente.*ing premises owned by John Joseph Cotter, at 441. Colombo Street, and committing theft. A remand was granted until March 8. Bail was allowed to the extent of £IOO, with a surety of £IOO, on the condition that accused report to the police daily. His brother. Alfred Richard Downing, thirty-nine year* of age. appeared on a charge of stealing, on or about Februarv 9, a Kodak camera, valued at £2, the property of an unknown person. “ I think there will be another charge pending,” said the chief-detective, asking for a remand. Accused was remanded to March 8, bail to the extent of £IOO, with one surety of £IOO, being allowed, on condition that he report to the police daily.
