WOOSUNG CAPTURED.
Chinese Command Refuses tc Surrender. SHANGHAI, March 3. Japanese forces, under cover of a heavy barrage from the warships, stormed and captured Woosung village at eight o’clock this morning. An eyewitness stated that the Japanese methods were similar to the manner in which they captured Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War. The Japanese commander through a Chinese enedavoured to persuade the troops defending the Woosung area to surrender, but the offer was rejected. The Japanese bombardment after this was merciless, the naval guns pounding the village. Finally the Chinese resistance became weaker and weaker and the Japanese infantry completed the slaughter. General Tanchisui, who commanded the Chinese forces, was among those killed, having announced his determination to resist to the last.
