Magistrate Criticises Young Driver. “ You young: fellows drive cars at ridiculous speeds and then come along: to me and say you can’t pay the fine.” said Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., to a youth charged with driving a motor-car at a dangerous speed, and for failing to stop when ordered to by a constable. “ T am an excellent hand at finding jobs for those who deserve them—indeed, I am quite a good labour exchange.” Accused, Herbert Radcliffe Black, who made a voluntary appearance, pleaded guilty to both charges. He admitted that on January 17, 1930, his license had been cancelled for two months, and he was fined £3 for dangerous driving. He explained that, though working, he had received no wages for the past three and a half months, and was ten weeks behind with his rent, but had just got a new job. The car had been borrowed from “ the firm.” Black said that he had acted on a foolish impulse. Defendant was fined £2 and costs for dangerous driving, and 20s and costs for failing to stop. His license was cancelled. The police stated that Black drove at 45 to 50 miles an hour down Colombo Street’’
