Babel, who was favourite, with £449, for the Trentham Highweight Handicap, showed up as the field swept into the straight, but never really flattered her supporters. The fifth favourite, Jayson, £230, led throughout and lasted long enough to win narrowly from Retract, who finished fast on the outside. The winner was backed to race at Riccarton in November, but got away badly on that occasion. Golden Wings, who was favourite with £B3l for the Wellington Stakes, was outpaced by the two-year-old Tea Chat. La Moderne, Tea Trader and Golden Wings showed up early. Head Lady, who came across from the outside entering the straight, took the lead and won by a length from Tea Trader. Head Lady won the juvenile handicaps at Foxton and Manawatu recently. She was fifth favourite to-day with £271. Heremia, who was second choice, with £517 10s, for the .Apprentices’ Plate, was fairly well placed in the early stages, and came on the outside. At the distance Orotorian came through the field, and the pair fought out a good finish, Heremia winning by a neck. The winner, who is in the Bronze Eagle stable, must possess a great chance for the Douro Cup. Ruling Light, who was the favourite, with £589, was in the leading division early, but faded out of the picture.
