WAR IN MANCHURIA.
Japanese Commence Drive Against Chinese. HEAVY CASUALTIES. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received December 22, 8.30 a.m.). SHANGHAI, December 21. The Japanese movement in eastern Manchuria is aimed principally at Chinese bandits and irregular soldiers, who have been leaderless since the defeat of General Manchu-san in the Nonni River battle. Two Japanese regiments are concentrating on Chinchow to drive out the Chinese, who are resisting stubbornly. I Japanese bombing ’planes at dawn to-day attacked the Chinese positions at Chang-tu, Tien-lciotung and Fakumen, inflicting heavy casualties. General Minami, former Japanese War Minister, has arrived in Manchuria and intends to remain for a fortnight to make a personal investigation be- : cause he believes that responsibility for the present situation is his, since he issued the original orders for the Japanese occupation of Manchuria.
