In excavating a vacant section of land on the corner of Bond Street and Wakefield Street, Wellington, for the purposes of a taxi-stand, workmen uncovered the totara piles of an old wharf, which in pre-reclamation days projected seaward from the old Customhouse Street. A peculiarity of these old piles is that some of them are substantially boxed in concrete, an unusual but very sound protection, as is shown by the excellent state of preservation of the wood. The wharf which occupied this position was known at various times at Watt and Tysier’s, Fitzherbert’s, Crawford’s, Pilcher’s and the Customs Wharf.
