Distribution at Training College. GIFT TO MR V. GRIFFITHS. The Training College hall was crowded on Saturday evening when the annual distribution of music prizes was held. Mr T. Vernon Griffiths, musical director, presided. Occasion was taken to present Mr Griffiths with a framed photograph of the orchestra, which he conducted, as a mark of the students’ appreciation of his services. Before making the distribution of certificates and awards, Mr J. G. Poison (principal of the college) congratulated the director and his staff on the successful completion of three years of work. He said that when present at the recent Festival of Music he had been most impressed with the results. Mr Poison urged upon the students the necessity for constant hard work and practice. Dr J. Hight (Rector of Canterbury College) said that he was pleased to speak in support of the classes and of th*e work which was being done at the college. “Mr Poison has always taken a practical interest in the musical side of the college's curriculum," said Mr Griffiths. “Much thanks is due to him for the kindness and encouragement which he has shown to the students. I wish also to thank Dr Hight for the. assistance he has been to us on this and similar occasions. The class teachers, too, have been splendid in their efforts, and their enthusiasm has been no small factor in our success.’’ Mr Griffiths then called for three cheers for the children and adults who had helped the college during the year. Items were given by the orchestra, which playied pieces specially composed by the director. Items were also given by a trio composed of Messrs Russell Thomson, Frank Callaway and Ronald Bain.
