RETURNED SOLDIERS.
Grants Made for Relief Work.
At the fortnightly meeting of the executive of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association there were present: Messrs F. T. Read (chairman). H. Fleck, E. W. Smith, A. L». Emerson. G. Dabourn, C. H. Chisnall, G. W. Lloyd, H. W. Wilkinson, J. S. Chisholm, J. Murphy (New .Brighton), and the secretary. The report of the committee showed that every effort was being made to Place as many men as possible in employment prior to Christmas. The following grants to local bodies were approved >— Christchurch City Council £IOO, . -Brighton Borough Council £SO, <f I ?^ church domains Board £SO. Summit Road Trust £SO, Waimakariri River
Trust £SO, Heathcote County Council £SO. It was decided to again call the attention of householders to the facilities available for the employment of returned soldiers in gardening, or other work, up to two days on a subsidy basis. The report of the Christmas Tree Committee showed that all arrangements were well in hand for the annual Christmas tree gathering for the children of deceased soldiers, which would this year be held at the Christ’s College grounds. The Salvation Army wrote asking if the association could make a donation to help in its work at the home in Poison Street. In view of the fact that a large number of returned soldiers have from time to time resided at this place, it. was decided to make a further grant of £lO.
