MILK BOTTLES.

Washed in a Clothes Tub. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. “ On one occasion on which I carried out an inspestion of a dairy I found the milk bottles being washed in the tubs where the household linen had been washed the previous Monday and no provision was made for the sterilisa* tion of the containers,” was an extract from the report of the inspector (Mr M’Gee) at the meeting of the Waimairi County Council last night. Mr Chapman said he could not see any harm in milk bottles being washed in washing tubs. The council should be reasonable. Mr Gardner: Anyone who caters for a public service must provide the proper appliances. Mr Cross: I consider it scandalous that such a state of things should exist. The chairman (Mr W. J. Walter) took strong exception to the remarks. He asked why should the dairymen in the county be branded for what was at best an isolated case. The milk supply of Christchurch was the best in the world. There were plenty of washtubs that anyone would drink from without any harm. The dairies were clean, the cows were clean and it was quite wrong to condemn dairymen for an isolated case. Mr Newnham: If you allow an isolated case you will have plenty of others before long. The inspector: It is not an isolated case. There is no doubt that w-ash-tubs are not suitable. Milk is the best medium for the conveyance of infectious diseases. We must protect the public. The Waimairi County Council contributes 50 per cent of the milk supplied to the urban and suburban districts. The council adopted the inspector’s recommendations.
