GOLD PROSPECTING.
Party will be Sent to West Coast Sounds. FAVOURABLE REPORT. (Special to the “ Star.**) WELLINGTON, December 18. As a result of the utilisation of unemployment funds for the encouragement of prospecting for minerals a report was recently submitted to the Mines Department by the leader of a prospecting party which had worked in the Dusky Sound district. Samples of various mineralised rocks are being investigated by the Dominion Laboratory, and already there is sufficient justification for a decision to send out early in the new year a party which will commence work on two areas where it is believed that the men will make good wages on an alluvial gold deposit. In addition to this activity, another group will be sent to Fanny Cove and Chalky Inlet to follow up the work of a prospecting party, while another area in Barn Bay district is to be similarly investigated by a party assisted from unemployment funds, subject to the usual conditions.
The joint efforts of the Unemplo3rment Board and Mines Department, in conjunction with a local committee at Thames have resulted in a fairly large development of a system of prospecting under supervision.
