TEACHER HONOURED.

Farewell Social Given to Miss M. I. Hardey. A farewell social was held at the Country Club last evening by the staff and ex-pupils of the West Christchurch District High School for Miss M. I. Hardey, the Standard, VI. girls’ mistress, who is leaving shortly for a holiday trip abroad. Mr Jones, chairman of the school committee, presided. Tl>e Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) spoke on the valuable work of the teachers who, he said, were not helped by the average person as much as they ‘might be. Mr L. F. de Berry, head master of the school, expressed regret at losing Miss Hardey, who had been on the staff of the school for the past fifteen years. Miss Hardey had, he said, a great personality with the children, her influence being marked with the senior girls. He joined with the staff in wishing Miss Hardey all happiness, and hoped that on her return from abroad she would again join the school. Miss Finlay son presented the departing teacher with a travelling rug and purse from the committee and the staff, and wished her a happy voyage. In reply, Miss Hardey said that men and children were happy when working, and on that principle she had endeavoured to keep her class happy; She thanked all those who had spoken so kindly of her and for their gifts. Songs were given by Miss Freda Judkins, “ If I Were a Bird ” and “A Heart That’s Free.” Mr .J. Walton contributed a humorous recitation. Supper was served, and the guests spent the remainder of the time in dancing and playing miniature golf in the beautiful grounds.,. Those present included the Mayor and Mayoress* (Mr and Mrs D. G.
