Some Misused Words.

“QNE OF YOUR READERS" writes: Would you please tell me, through your paper, which of the following two sentences is correct English? They refer to New Zealand made articles. (1) No one could better these New Zealand made. They stand alone, their equal remain unknown. (2) No one could better these New Zealand made. They stand alone, their equals remain unknown.

Both of the sentences are ungrammatical and unimpressive. They attempt* very haltingly, to express a worthy sentiment, like the man who said that many an honest heart beats beneath a ragged pair of trousers.

“ These New Zealand made ” means nothing. If you said “ New Zealand made articles” that would pass as an advertising expression, but grammatically it would be wrong. Strictly speaking, you should say “ These articles, made in New Zealand,” or some such grammatical alternative. The punctuation of both sentences is faulty. 44 Equal ”, being a singular noun, cannot take the plural verb 44 remain ”. TOUCHSTONE.
