SCHOOL OF ART.

Exhibition of Work by Pupils. ANNUAL PRIZE GIVING. Congratulations on the success of the year’s work were tendered by all speakers at the annual prize-giving and exhibition of work of the Canterbury College School of Art on Saturday evening, and afterwards the many friends and relatives of the students who attended had an opportunity of judging for themselves in what measure it was merited. Even to them the quality of the work must have come as a surprise. It was a splendid exhibition in many ways, and in some it was outstanding. In the various classrooms were grouped the various sections of the students’ work, and for several hours on Saturday they were packed with an eager crowd of visitors. All classes of art were represented, and even the work of the more elementary students showed a degree of understanding, originality and treatment that was amazing. Some of the colour work, splendidly conceived and executed, and the drawings from life were well done. It was in the poster and craft sections, though, that the best work was displayed. The poster section was the best exhibited for some years, and included some original and boldly carried out ideas. Directors' Remarks. The director congratulated the students and instructors on the year’s work. Considered generally, he said, all sections of the school were working well. The work of the students had developed in many ways, and he considered that in one channel it had made considerable progress. That was in the study of the history of painting, sculpture, art craft and Heraldry. The Hon G. J. Smith congratulated the prize-winners, particularly Miss Vera Pollard, the first girl to win the New Zealand Institute of Architects’ prize. Prize List.
