TASMAN FLIGHT.
Selection of Pilot is Discussed. DESIGNER’S OPINION. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, December 14. The cabled advice from /Sydney that Captain L. R. Jones, of Ryde, has been selected as chief pilot on the Tasman flight was referred to Mr Don Harkness, the designer of Norman Smith’s racing car and the designer of the engine in the aeroplane. Mr Harkness did not think that Captain Jones would be the man ultimately chosen. “ When I left Sydney,” he said, “ the choice lay between two men, and Mr Jones was not included. Of course, those making the selection may change their plans at the last minute, but I think one of those I have in mind will be at the controls when the machine leaves for New Zealand.
“ It is necessary that the pilot should have plenty of experience in blind flying.”
