Members of friendly societies will regret to learn of the seriohs illness of P.P.G.M. Brother J. Cleworth, who was president of the Dispensary Board in 1906-7, and financial secretary of Loyal Phillipstown Lodge for many years. P.P.G.M. Bro H. B. Veitch has resigned from the presidency of the U.F.S. dispensary owing to ill-health. Bro John D. Hathaway, a member for over fifty years of the Hope of St Albans Lodge, U.A.0.D., has been on the sick list for some time. At the monthly meeting of the Board of Management, U.A.0.D., last Thursday evening, a vote of sympathy was passed with I.P.G.P. Bro M. O’Donaghue in the death of his wife. Druids will learn with regret of the illness of P.G.P. Bro George Bates, who is at present in Bottle Lake Hospital. Wor. Bro A. Hay, Grand Secretary of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society, visited Christchurch and paid an official visit to Queen’s Own Lodge. Friendly Societies Council. The, quarterly meeting of the Friendly Socifeties Council was held on Saturday evening, the president (Bro A. Forsey) presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with the Loyal Volunteer Lodge, M.U., in their loss of Bro C. Millington. A letter was received from the Grand Lodge, U.A.0.D., asking the council to protest against the action of the Government in making lodges apply for permission to use their benevolent funds for grants to lodges who had suffered by the recent earthquake in Napier and Hastings. Twenty-one ladies answered the recent circular sent out in regard to the Dominion Friendly Societies Council and it was decided that the time was not opportune in forming local branches.

U.F.S. Dispensaries. Throughout the Dominion, U.F.S. Dispensaries are passing through troublous times. A serious loss in trading in a large North Island dispensary has brought about a petition to the Registrar of Friendly Societies from a section of a society for the dissolution of the dispensary on the grounds that the levy paid by members does not pay for the benefits received by them. The loss is attributable to competition and the heavy toll of prescriptions dispensed to members and the failure of fhembers to trade with the dispensary in their general purchases. 1.0.G.T. Sumner Pride —C.T. Sister J. Duff presided over the 1 weekly meeting at which a large, number of visitors attended, including Sister Eldridge (superintendent) and members of the Ever Onward TernpFe. Brother Stevens intendent Lily of Valley), Brother Rennie (superintendent), Brother Hill and members of the Southern Cross Lodge, Sisters Smith and Teague (Hope of Christchurch Lodge). In connection with Sumner Pride Juveniles, a Junior Lodge was opened by Brother Rennie, S.J.W., P e called The Sumner United No j 4 Officers were elected as follows:—CT Sister T. Ritual Competition Shield—The presenation of the Shield won in connection with the Ritual competition will take place in the W.C.T.U. rooms in Manchester Street, on Saturday, November 28, at 7.30 p.m. A.O.F. Court Papanui—C.R. Brother A. Donald over the meeting held on a committee was set up to deal the position which has arisen over members. which N.G. Brother G. R. Tagg presided. Two members were declared off the sick fund and five declared on. Accounts and sick pay to the amount of £42 12s 3d were passed for payment. P.A.F.S. Queen’s Own Lodge, No. 36—At the last meeting it was announced in connection with unemployed members’ contributions that the Grand Lodge proposals provided for the payment of the whole of the contributions from Grand Lodge funds. Amendments of considerable value to members have been made to rules, including one that members wives can now be registered, without tee tor a death benefit of £ls as an addition to the £45 now paid on the death of a member. Ladies are also eligible tor membership at attractive rates, and juvenile girls can now be admitted on the same terms as boys. G. Secretary or - Brother A. A letter from the District on the question of postponing the annual District Conference caused considerable discussion and it was decided to support thQ holding of the conference as usual. An invitation to visit the northern branch of the Loyal Sister Pearce Lodge on December 3 was accepted. A letter from the Grand Master of the New Zealand branch congratulated the members on the fine effort which was being made to assist unemployed and distressed members. It was decided that the Loyal Malvern Lodge be entertained- on December 5 and that permission be requested to hold the usual lodge meeting on the Saturday night instead of Monday night. The election of officers Resulted as follows:—Noble Grand, Brother Geo. Dawson; Vice-Grand, Brother M. Yarrall; elective secretary, Brother H. Buchanan; lecture master, Brother A. Gow. U.A.O.D. Board of Management.—A meeting of the Board of Management last Thursday was presided over by the Grand President, Bro, F. Chittock. There was a full attendance Qf Grand Lodge officers, Board members and Grand Trustees and yisiting Past Grand Presidents. An important discussion took place on the report of the executive concerning the method of ballot for the election of Grand Lodge officers, Board of Management and Grand Trustees. The report was adopted and P.G.P. Bro J. Jowsey was appointed returning officer and with him P.G.P.’s Bros T. Burgess and R. H. Parker w'ere appointed scrutineers. The trustees’ report on investments was adopted and the Unemployed Members Committee reported that up to the present thirty-nine brethren had been assisted. A vote of sympathy was accorded to P.G.P. Bro M. O’Donoghue in his bereavement. The Grand Lodge officers reported on their official visits during the month to the various city and country lodges and to the Royal Arch Chapter’s presentation of prizes. The Muchmore Challenge Shield.—The Royal Arch Chapter competitions for the Muchmore Challenge Shield in South Canterbury attracted a number of competitors and the verdict of the judges went to Ivy of Waimate (No. 1 team) with 89 points. „ Ho SS °S Albans - — Th e Arch Druid Bro W-. The sale of the hall necessitated a change in the place of meeting and it was decided that the first meeting in the Benevolent Hall, Canon Street, would take place on December 22. Star of Ashburton.—The Arch Druid (Bro J. Bostock) presided over a good attendance on Monday evening and amongst the visitors were I.P.G.P. Bro M. O’Donaghue, D.P. Sister R. Crun (Success of Ashburton), P.A. Bro J. Thomson (Hope of St Albans) and sisters from the Success of Ashburton Lodge. A motion of sympathy with Bro L. C. Stevenson in the loss of his wife was passed. The Royal Arch Chapter extended an invitation to attend the Success of Ashburton Lodge next Monday, when an installation would be held. It was decided to accept the invitation. Arrangements were made to hold a combined installation of officers of Star of Ashburton and Success of Ashburton Lodges on December 7. The election of officers resulted as follows:—A.D., Bro T. H. Pennall; V.A., Bro J. Garriock; secretary, Bro G. V. Furby; treasurer, Bro W. Christmas; A.D. bards, Bros Miller and O’Connor; V.A. bards, R. Chambers and A. Garriock; 1.G., Bro C. Parkin and S. Hawke were nominated for D.P. of No. 8 district. It was decided to invite Temuka Lodge to the installation of officers.

Punui Lodge.—The half-yearly meeting was held on Monday evening, A.D. Bro Lapsley presiding, D.P. Bro Styles and P.G.P. Bro J. Fisher (Oak of Sydenham Lodge) being present. Bro Watkins, who had just returned from an extended tour of the Old Land, gave the lodge an interesting account of his travels and the U.A.O.D. Conference held in Southampton. Six members who were out of employment asked for assistance and it was decided to pay all their contributions to date, amounting to £9 5s lid.
