CONCESSION FARES.

Tramway Board Proposes Increase. DEPUTATION PENDING. A schedule showing the proposed increases in tramway concession fares was made available at the meeting *of the Tramway Board yesterday afternoon, but the matter was held over for a week in order that the board might hear a deputation representing the Sumner line The report of the Works and Traffic Committee stated that the reduction in operating expenses, combined with the wages cut, had not enabled the board to balance its budget, and there I was an estimated deficiency at March ! 31, 1932, of £IO,OOO to be considered. Increases From 3d to Is. The new schedule increases the cost from 3s to 3s 3d of the monthly 24-ride tickets over two sections. The increase is 3d over three sections, 6d over four sections and to Mount Pleasant. Sockburn, Bexley and Cashmere Hills. Nmepence is added for trips of six sections, such as to the Riccarton Racecourse, New Brighton, Redcliffs, and the Cashmere Hills terminus. The increase on 24 trips to Clifton, North Beach and Sumner terminus is Is. There is no increase in the price of the trip tickets sold by conductors, and on which there is no time limit, but the number of rides is reduced from 15 to 14 There is no change in the charges for trolley buses for the first three sections, as the bus fares are in excess of the proposed new tram rates. The committee has recommended that all tickets should be available for use by one person only on the trip travelled. School and apprentice tickets are to have an all-round increase oi 6d per ticket of 45 rides. School tickets are to be made non-available for use during any term holidays. Matter of Courtesy. Mrs E. R. M'Combs moved that the matter be held over until next meeting, as a deputation representing the Sumner line wished to wait on the board. The board’s revenue was going back by about £SOO a week, stated Mr D. Sykes. Cheaper fares were a very good catch cry, but the board must find the revenue or strike a fate. The matter was held over for a week.
