“BRIGHTON.”

According to the Rev J. P. BaconPhillips, Brighton is the most happily named place in England. He says;— “It is a moot point, and one not likely ever to be cleared up satisfacwhen Brighton was evolved out of Brightheemstone. I recently came across the copy of a marriage license, in which a certain ‘ Elizabeth Brighton, of Henley, co. Worcester, Mayde, is authorised to marry Thomas Godly,’ dated October 9, 1667. It is there clear that Brighton as a surname is earlier than as a place name. ”
